The training course "Connecting Formal and Non-Formal Education in Action” will bring together 24 European Union social workers, youth workers and trainers working with disadvantaged children in formal or non-formal settings in Ergli, Latvia for 8 days in the first half of December 2010. The inspiration of the project is to create space for dialogue between representatives of Formal and Non-Formal educational systems who work with disadvantaged young people either in youth centres, social care or special educational institutions in their countries and prepare current needs analyzes of education of young people, access to non-formal education for disadvantaged young people. The participants will have a possibility to exchange information about educational systems in their countries, learn about formal and non-formal structures in Europe, get new tools and information to use in their work and enhance quality of projects and future cooperation particularly in frame of Youth in Action program.

The main aim is to create space for dialogue between representatives of Formal and Non-Formal system who work with disadvantaged young people aged 12-18 in their countries and prepare current needs analyzes of education of young people and develop local project in cooperation between schools and NGOs using formal and non-formal methodology.

Target group of the training: The topic was narrowed down to address particularly the need of teachers, social workers, youth workers, trainers who work with disadvantaged youth in special educational and social care institutions, youth organizations to increase access to non-formal and European projects for socially, culturally, economically disadvantaged youth.

Objectives:
  • to exchange the role of FE and NFE in various educational systems and policies in different parts of Europe and to get to know realities of Formal and Non-formal education in participants’ countries
  • to explore links between the formal and non-formal education and find where they can work together for benefit of both and to discuss how FE and NFE address the learning needs of individuals and communities
  • to raise participants awareness on the importance of their role as educators and multipliers in the development of education system and create space for cooperation between teachers and youth workers and prepare joint local activities
  • to analyze role of NFE and FE in lifelong learning and learning to learn approach particularly for disadvantaged youngsters in European society
  • to create a common understanding of different cultures, to provide possibility to interact with youth from other parts of the Europe and experience cultural diversity

The working methods of the project will be diverse and multipurpose addressing different learning styles: presentations, interactive workshops including elements of group work individual work, discussions, exchange of experience, debates, study visits, etc. The chosen methods are based on idea of active participation to allow the best input and involvement of participants.
